Digital-Intelligent Integrated Oral Medical Center

Date:2025-06-27

In 2018, our hospital officially established the Digital Oral Diagnosis and Treatment Center, a collaborative platform for digital design, manufacturing, and R&D constructed jointly by the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics, Department of Implant Prosthetics, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Endodontics, Department of Periodontology, and the Dental Prosthetics Center. In 2024, due to technological updates and multidisciplinary integration, it was upgraded to the Digital-Intelligent Integrated Oral Medical Center. The center spans an area of about 300 m² and is equipped with cutting-edge digital acquisition and processing devices such as 3shape, RK, Itero, and icam4D. It has five prosthetic technicians who primarily collaborate with the hospital on digital scanning, immediate chairside restoration, and aesthetic restoration design and fabrication. They provide support for the application of digital technologies across various clinical departments and undertake processing, experimental, teaching, and research tasks for the School of Stomatology at Nanjing Medical University, the Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases Research at Nanjing Medical University, and the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center for Translational Medicine in Stomatology.

Digital oral diagnosis and treatment technologies refer to techniques that assist oral physicians in achieving precise, efficient, automated, and intelligent diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases through digital hardware or software. Digital diagnosis and treatment in our hospital began in 2011, starting with chairside CAD/CAM immediate restoration, progressing to 3D analysis of orthodontic facial features; from digital surgical guidance for implants to digital occlusal reconstruction for maxillofacial fractures. A vast amount of clinical work and scientific research in digital-assisted design and fabrication have been conducted, exploring digital diagnosis and treatment models across various disciplines and cultivating a team of digital diagnosis and treatment professionals.

The center is equipped with multiple advanced digital diagnosis and treatment devices. The digital information acquisition system includes Sirona's CEREC Omnicam intraoral scanner, icam4D scanner, 3shape intraoral scanner, and model scanner. The digital design software system comprises restoration and implant design software—Sirona's CEREC Biogeneric and 3shape's full restoration module and full implant guide software; orthodontic analysis and design software—3shape's orthodontic appliance design software, US Dolphin 3D, and German Onyx orthodontic analysis software; and oral and maxillofacial surgery design software—Materialise ProPlan CMF. The digital fabrication system includes 3D resin printers, 3D laser sintering machines, and digital milling machines.

Currently, the center offers various digital diagnosis and treatment projects, including fixed and removable restorations and DSD aesthetic design in the field of prosthodontics; digital guidance for implant surgery and digital implant restoration in the field of implantology; digital design and fabrication of fixed orthodontic appliances in the field of orthodontics; orthognathic occlusal guides and fibula osteotomy shaping guides in oral and maxillofacial surgery; guided access cavity guides in endodontics; crown lengthening surgery guides in periodontology; and various types of occlusal splints in the field of temporomandibular joint disorders.
