The Affiliated Stomatology Hospital of Nanjing Medical University (School of Stomatology), also known as Jiangsu Provincial Stomatology Hospital and Jiangsu Provincial Red Cross Stomatology Hospital, is the first tertiary-grade Class A specialized oral hospital in Jiangsu Province. It serves as the leading unit for the joint construction of the national-level regional center for oral medicine by the National Health Commission and the province, as well as a key construction unit for high-level hospitals in Jiangsu. Currently, it is the vice president unit of the Chinese Stomatological Association, the president unit of the Jiangsu Provincial Stomatological Association, and a unit for the construction of research-oriented hospitals in Jiangsu. It is also home to the Jiangsu Provincial Oral Health Guidance Center, Jiangsu Provincial Oral Medical Quality Control Center, and Jiangsu Provincial Incubation Center for Grassroots Specialty Departments.
The hospital covers an area of over 70,000 m², consisting of 13 primary clinical departments, 7 medical technical departments, and 9 off-site outpatient departments. With an annual outpatient and emergency volume of over 900,000 visits and more than 5,000 inpatient discharges per year, the hospital boasts four national key clinical specialties: endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, prosthodontics, and orthodontics. All core departments of stomatology are recognized as provincial key clinical specialties. For three consecutive years, it has achieved an A rating in the national performance assessment of tertiary public hospitals, the highest level among oral specialty hospitals across China.
The hospital pioneered the "Pre-diagnosis 3-Minute" medical service model in China, endorsed by the former Ministry of Health. It has been continuously promoting multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment as well as the development of specialized departments. Efforts have been made to establish the first 5G + Oral Telemedicine Consultation Center in the province, thus enhancing capabilities in complex disease management and critical technologies. As a construction unit for the Jiangsu Provincial Elderly Health Promotion Project and the Research Center for Oral Health Education of Children and Adolescents, the hospital focuses on the elderly and children, adopting various measures to prioritize life-cycle oral care for all ages. It is also the first in Jiangsu to host the national medical licensing practical skills examination and examiner training base (dental category), a provincial demonstration base for training general dentists, one of the first national standardized training bases for resident physicians (dental category), and a standardized training base for specialty physicians in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
The hospital now has over 900 staff members, including more than 160 with senior titles, over 20 doctoral supervisors, and more than 70 master’s supervisors. Over 50 individuals have been honored with national and provincial distinctions, such as the national major talent program, the State Council special allowance, Jiangsu outstanding middle-aged and young experts, leading medical talents, recipients of the Distinguished Youth Fund, distinguished teaching masters, distinguished professors, as well as participants in the "333 Project," "Shuang Chuang Plan," and "Six Talent Peaks" at the provincial level and above. Over 90 experts hold academic leadership positions such as chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the Chinese Stomatological Association.
Stomatology at Nanjing Medical University is Jiangsu’s only dominant discipline in stomatology-related fields. It has the authority to grant doctoral degrees in the first-level discipline and professional doctoral degrees, and it houses a postdoctoral research station. It has been approved as a Jiangsu Provincial Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base. In the 2024 ShanghaiRanking's China University Rankings for the dental specialty, it ranked 7th nationwide and 1st in Jiangsu Province. The dental medicine program is one of the first national first-class undergraduate programs and a specialized characteristic program in higher education. It has also been recognized as a brand program and key program in Jiangsu Province's higher education. It has received one national teaching achievement award (second prize) and one Jiangsu Province teaching achievement award (first prize), respectively.
The hospital hosts the National Key Laboratory for Research and Prevention of Oral Diseases (incubation site), the Jiangsu Provincial Engineering Research Center for Oral Translational Medicine, and the Clinical Research Center for Stomatology of Nanjing Medical University. Over the past five years, it has undertaken over 200 projects at various levels, including more than 50 national-level projects such as key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation. It has successively received awards such as the Second Prize for Natural Sciences from the Ministry of Education and the Second Prize for Science and Technology from Jiangsu Province.
The hospital values domestic and international exchanges and collaborations. It has developed long-term partnerships with universities such as the University of Illinois at Chicago, Aarhus University and Aalborg University in Denmark, and the University of Hong Kong. Joint international courses have been launched with the University of Dundee in the UK and Marquette University in the US. It has also established diverse and multi-level collaborations with over 100 dental institutions in Xinjiang, Tibet, and the East China region, etc. for medical alliances and specialty development.
